It’s so reassuring to know that your own midwife will be there for you when you come home with your new baby; our midwives have a wealth of experience to help you manage those early days.
Many women have commented that whilst they felt wonderfully supported during pregnancy and birth, once they got home with a brand new baby, it was a different story. The most important thing when you are learning to look after your baby is to have consistent, encouraging, available support. We know how daunting it is leaving hospital with a brand new baby, and also how reassuring it is to know that kind, experienced, professional help is at hand.
I have always been aware of the need for greater postnatal support for new parents, sadly it is not always available, with NHS maternity services stretched as they are. I can still clearly remember taking my eldest daughter home and feeling the enormous weight of responsibility for this new little life descend on our inexperienced shoulders as we closed the front door! I didn’t need someone there 24/7, I just needed to know someone would come each day to help me. Our new Birth Team service will put you in the very capable hands of our dedicated postnatal midwifery team, who will support and help you while you get the hang of being a mum.
The midwives who are going to help you have many years of midwifery experience, are up to date with current practice, and are mothers themselves. They are kind, easy to talk to, and very down to earth.
We aim to supplement, not replace, your normal NHS midwifery visits. We will work together with them, and will have the time and flexibility that an overloaded service cannot offer, however much it would like to. We will give you time to ask all the questions you want, to help and advise on feeding, bathing, sleeping, any aspects of baby or new mother care; whatever you need. Sometimes all you need is reassurance that you are doing a great job!
The service is available to all mothers whichever hospital their babies were born in, NHS or privately. The areas covered are Barnet, Bushey, Edgware, Finchley, Radlett, St Albans, Stanmore, Hemel Hempstead and Watford. If you live close to these areas but your home town is not stated here then please get in contact.
You can pre-book packages of either 10 hours or 5 hours of postnatal care. 10 hours of pre-booked time costs £1,150 and 5 hours of pre-booked time costs £600 (£1,300 and £650 if not pre-booked). This time with your midwife, is usually in one hour visits, plus one home visit in pregnancy so that you can meet. There is no rush; your time can be used in the best way for you over a three week period. Some mothers might want a visit each day for 5 or 10 days, some may want to spread it out over a longer period. Usually more visits are helpful in the first week to 10 days.
Pre-booked packages include a home visit during pregnancy, and postnatal telephone support.
Parents who already have a child can find life is very different with two children; our visiting service is for all parents, not just first timers, as we can give you lots of support and survival tips for the first weeks.
From experience, we would recommend that first time mothers would get the most benefit from the full package, particularly if breastfeeding support is needed.
Payment can be made by BACS (details given on booking) or cheque (made payable to “Sarah Denning”). This is payable in advance.
This can be anything from a one-off visit, 3 visits or as many as you need.
One visit of 1 ½ hours is £200 + £50 for a home visit in pregnancy.
Additional visits £130 per hour.
